Veterans Village of San Diego

Facility Overview and History (Compiled from Public Sources)

Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) has long provided recovery programs, transitional housing, and support services for veterans in the region. In 2024, state health regulators suspended and later revoked VVSD’s residential substance‑use treatment license following several drug‑related deaths and documented safety violations. This action applied solely to the residential treatment program.

In 2025, a federal oversight report from the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General reviewed VVSD’s earlier compliance issues and found that several corrective measures had not yet been fully implemented. The report also noted gaps in oversight by VA staff responsible for monitoring contracted programs, indicating that some concerns identified in prior years had taken longer than expected to resolve.

Although these issues drew significant public attention at the time, conditions now appear to have improved based on more recent observations and day‑to‑day experience at the facility. The author has lived at VVSD since February 2026 and notes a stable, closely monitored environment. For a detailed account of the earlier regulatory actions, click here.

VVSD publishes a newsletter, VVSD News, which primarily provides institutional updates and includes limited resident input. This level of participation is typical for organizations operating similar veteran service programs. Greater involvement from residents can help strengthen services by identifying gaps, improving relevance, and highlighting issues staff may not always see.

Other positive aspects worth noting include the small, well‑kept communal garden maintained by volunteer residents and the quality of meals served in the VVSD cafeteria. Drawing on prior professional kitchen experience — including earlier work at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco — the author finds the food consistently well prepared and visually appealing.
